Chagall at Seoul Museum of Art

Sunday Morning Gallery Visit

About a week a go I saw a poster for an exhibition of Chagall on the train.
I have never seen Chagall before, if I have probably one or two small ones in Tate. So I really wanted to see the exhibition but, hmmm, couldn't help hesitating.

I guess if you are living in some big cities like NY, London, Paris or Berlin. I know you get amazing exhibitions so frequently, you forget to be thankful.
But in Seoul, there hadn't been many nice exhibitions in the past. Whenever they put up some major exhibitions of like Picasso or Expressionist(they are the favorites, you know), the exhibitions lacked most of the 'important' paintings of the artist. The gallery spaces were filled with photographs, prints or some famous quotes, i don't mean they are less worthy but I felt they just had no money and not enough effort or ability to bring those works to show. And, in my view, it's pretty hard to read how the artist went through his life and carried his art with him if the exhibition misses most of his major works. I mean It used to be when i was living in Seoul 5 years ago.

So that slightly put me off, but I was tempted with little hope. I asked my sister and mum to go to exhibitions with me. They, of course, said big YES.

Last sunday, we made a visit to Seoul Musem of Art(www.seoulmoa.org) in Sichung(City Hall, Line no.1 and 2, exit no.12). From the entrance we could see quite many people include little children, who we actually don't like to be with in galleries. Anyway. We got the ticket for 12.000 KRW for each, I know it's quite jaw dropping, then got into the gallery. After reading his chronically ordered biography I moved to the paintings.

I don't know how you enjoy paintings, but I love them and used to dream to be a painter. But I'm not into technical things or theoretical things. I just love looking at them, the colour, shades, shapes, little faces and big emotion, and thinking about the painter who were in front when it was being born. Then somehow a big wave of unknown emotion sweeps over back of my nose.

This time, it is wasn't a gigantic wave, but a steady lavender one.
When a guy and a girl frying over a village while holding each other, a big mirror pour the purple lamp over the little prayer, and a bouquet of white flower fills his studio.

The exhibition will continue till 27th March 2011. Make yourself to the lavender Land.
